Digital trust is the confidence that when you hand your data over, it’s used the way you were told — and no further. India can’t have a trillion-dollar digital economy without it: every UPI payment, every telemedicine consultation, every government portal depends on people believing their data is safe enough to share. The DPDP Act and Rules are the mechanism. Digital trust is the actual destination.
Common misconception — That regulation and trust pull in opposite directions — one about restriction, the other about confidence. In practice, well-designed rules are what make trust possible at scale, between people who will never meet the organisations holding their data.
The DPDP Act isn’t the goal. Digital trust is. The Act is just how India is trying to get there.
