The DPDP Act sets a legal floor. Responsible data use is a separate, higher standard — one the law doesn’t require, but that mature organisations hold themselves to anyway.

Could you describe this exact use of someone’s data to them directly, and expect them to be comfortable with it?
That second question is a genuinely useful test, precisely because it isn’t a legal one. Plenty of data uses pass every DPDP requirement and would still make the average person uneasy if they saw exactly how their data was actually being used. Organisations that only ever ask “is this legal” tend to find that boundary eventually, usually the hard way.
“Is it legal” and “would I be comfortable explaining this to the person it’s about” are two different questions — and the second one is where trust actually gets won or lost.
